Men of Rajasthan by Waswo X. Waswo with Hand-Colourist Rajesh Soni, contributions by Maya Kovskaya and Amrita Gupta Singh. American-born artist Waswo X. Waswo brings a portion of his widely discussed series A Studio in Rajasthan to Serindia Gallery, resulting in this handsome book Men of Rajasthan. Working in collaboration with a team of Indian artists, Waswo playfully recreates and examines the tradition of vintage studio portraiture. Waswo's chief accomplice in this endeavour is Rajesh Soni, a third generation Rajasthani hand-colourist whose grandfather was once court photographer to the Maharana Bhopal Singh of Mewar. Soni's careful and highly talented painting of each photograph adds a vintage feel to work that hovers enigmatically between the retro and the contemporary. Men of Rajasthan contains fifty images annotated with delightful commentary by the photographer himself and further uncovers the male-centric universe of a uniquely mysterious place. This book accompanies an exhibition Men of Rajasthan at Serindia Gallery, Bangkok 27 January - 27 February 2011.

The 51 photographs in this collection were all taken in Mr. Waswo's Udaipur studio. These portraits combine Mr. Waswo's photographic talents with the skills of traditional chitrakar (painters) who have recreated cityscapes, jungles and elaborately painted village huts in their backdrops for this collection of images. Another Udaipur artist, Rajesh Soni, completes the magic by applying his skills as a hand-colorist to Mr. Waswo's photographs. The result is a record, not just of Mr. Waswo's studio in Udaipur, but more importantly, the creative encounters that took place there.MEN OF RAJASTHAN is a beautiful book of portraits. The photos in this book are what caused me to pick it up. The writing in the book is what makes it come alive. Anyone who has visited India or Rajasthan will probably relate. A good selection and a fun read and look.
As a tv and stylist I was immediately drawn to this book. It is exquisite. It harkens back to an era 100 years ago, but creatively mixes contemporary elements to create this visual feast. I have advised all my ad photographer friends, especially those specialisiing in portraiture photographers to get a copy for their library. Painted backdrop sets, hand tinted pictures, and a creative eye work here. Highy recommended.
Upon first examination, I concentrated on the text of ("Men of Rajasthan" by Waswo Waswo) which I found not only informative (especially for those not familiar with the region or the subject), but honestly and clearly depicted, based on years of keen observation and admiration of the subject. The historical, social and cultural facts are very engaging.
The images themselves are charming, amusing and orientally beautiful. The cooperation of artists, designers, craftsmen and models produce a final photograph of striking remembrance. Highly recommended
